On January 23,2024, Geraldine McFry Whorton passed peacefully while holding hands with her husband of 68 years. The Lord blessed her with 86 years of life. Born on April 3, 1937, she was a lifelong Piedmont native and was well-loved in her small town.
Left to cherish her memories are her husband, Jack Whorton; her two children, Randall (Connie) Whorton and Lynn (Gregg) Ponder. She always provided support and love to her three grandchildren; Dallas (Bree) Whorton, Clay Ponder, and Caley (Devin) Sauls. And her favorite thing to do was boast about her three great-grandchildren; Olivia Kirby, Scout Whorton and Behr Whorton.
She was survived by her sister-in-law, Glenda Rhinehart, and lots of special nieces and nephews. She also was blessed with special brothers; Mike Smith, Foster (Peggy) Smith, and Joe Smith.
She was preceded in death by her parents Earl McFry and step-mother Doris McFry; mother, Pauline Smith McFry; brothers, Bill McFry and Larry McFry, and her special brother, Glover Smith.
Pallbearers will be Dallas Whorton, Clay Ponder, Bobby Whorton, JR Smith, Joseph McCurdy, and Mark McFry.
She loved to work in her garden, can/freeze her produce, and most of all make quilts for her loved ones and cook for her family. If you ever visited her home, she would not let you leave without eating.
She was a member of the Paws and Taws Square Dance Club and loved to sing in the choir at Philadelphia Baptist Church where she attended for over 30 years. She was a hard worker at Lawtex, Springs, and Playtex for well over 50 years. Fifty-one years ago, Geraldine was a founding member of the Forney Wagon Train Trail Ride.
We will celebrate Geraldine’s life with a service at Dansby Heritage Chapel on Friday, January 26 with Rev. Robert Staggs officiating. Visitation will be from 12 pm-2 pm and funeral following at 2pm. Graveside will follow at Piedmont Memory Garden.
The family would like to express their gratitude to ProHealth Southern Care New Beacon Hospice for their kindness. The family requests no flowers, but donations can be made to Philadelphia Baptist Church PO Box 815 Piedmont, AL.
