Following a long struggle with dementia, H.S. Law, Jr. passed away May 10, 2023, at Gadsden Regional Hospital. Visitation with the family will be Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Dailey Street Baptist Church in Piedmont, Alabama, and services officiated by Ted Anderson will begin at 11:00 a.m. Burial will occur at Nances Creek Methodist Church next to his beloved wife of 67 years, Carolyn Sue Needham of Nances Creek, who passed in December of 2021."H," as many knew him, was born to Herbert Slaughter and Minnie Connell Law in October 1934 in Spring Garden, Alabama, and lost his dear mother at the tender age of four. He had a servant's heart and put his limbs to that work throughout his life: First to his country via 26 years in the Air Force -- both overseas in places such as Korea and Turkey and while stationed, among other places, in Homestead, Florida and Anchorage, Alaska (Elmendorf), where he retired and remained for many years. His hearing loss in military service left him disabled, and he remained an active supporter of veterans' rights thereafter. A faithful servant of the Lord, he insisted on grace before every meal alone or with others and taught his grandchildren and great-grandchildren to do the same, and served those around him in the church and broader community, as a deacon in several churches and for many years at Daily Street Baptist Church, where he also served on several committees. Not only family members but many a Piedmont resident in need over the years has owed a working appliance free of charge to Mr. Law, or gotten a surprise batch of freshly cleaned found golf balls from him.He adored his wife, who fed and cared for him well throughout their many years together, and in turn he spoiled and overfed their little dog Molly. He was an avid sportsman known for his passion for fishing and golf (if you didn't know about his two holes in one, now you do), and though he was known to brag on just about every young man who ever wore a University of Alabama football jersey and all those who coached the team, he had difficulty talking about any great-grandchild without choking up: No calf was so strong and no brain was so sharp as those of the little ones who ran regularly through his house in his later years.
