JERRY JAKE “BUNKUM” BAGGETT, SR., 82, of Piedmont, passed from his earthly home to his heavenly home in the early hours of Sunday, March 24, 2024, at Jacksonville Health & Rehab. He was born in Piedmont, to Irey Jack and Hazel Sudon Young Baggett, one of seven children. His parents preceded him in death as well as two brothers; Joe Paul Baggett and Grover Cornelius Baggett; and three brothers in law: Donald C. Crumley, Charles Johnson, and Glenn Dixon.
Mr. Baggett, a very strong Christian man, was one who was always helping others in need, whether it be money, food, or whatever. He was so concerned about the community, in his garage he founded the Piedmont Food Bank, which is now the Benevolent Center. He loved his church, Plainview Congregational Holiness Church, where he was a devoted member and Deacon. He helped build the original Atlanta Braves Stadium and owned his own business, Baggett's Truck Service, for over 50 years. He was a heavy equipment specialist. He was the most loving husband to his wife for 61 years, as well as the most loving father, grandfather, and brother.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Johnnie Studdard Baggett; two daughters: Tammy Baggett (Bill) Dankovich and Jackie Baggett (Michael) Encinas; two sons: Grant Hearon Baggett and Jerry Jake (LaTisha) Baggett, Jr.; sisters: Geraldine Yazza (Delton) Calhoun, Shirley (Tommy) Woodall, Caroleen Crumley, Sandra Johnson, and Deborah Hall; grandchildren: Amanda Leigh (Ryan) Maddox, Rachel Elizabeth (Krae) Keener, Daisy Grace Baggett, Kourtney Leigh Baggett; and Nikalus Jake Baggett; and two great grandchildren: Kaley Brynn Wood and Evan Tate Wood.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 27, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. from Dansby Heritage Chapel with visitation from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow in Piedmont Memory Garden. Rev. Gregg Thurman will be officiating. Pallbearers are Tommy Carroll Jr, Jake Baggett, Jakeb Amberson, Krae Keener, Ryan Maddox and Louis "Scooter" Franklin.
