Katherine Gowens
January 26, 1926 – September 10, 2015
Norma Katherine Goss Gowens passed away Thursday, September 10, 2015 at Gadsden Regional Medical Center after a brief illness at the age of 89. She was born January 26, 1926, the third child of Sam Tilton and Cora Wood Goss. She met and married Odus Gowens in 1942 while he was serving in the US Army. They were married 59 years at the time of his death in 2001.
Mrs. Gowens lived most of her life in the Piedmont and Pleasant Gap area where she invested her life in making a home for her husband and daughter. She was also much involved in the lives of her siblings. She had lived in Arab, AL for the past eight years and more recently lovingly cared for at Dugger Mountain Assisted Living in Piedmont.
Gardening and her flowers were her hobbies and she spent time enjoying those endeavors. She was known in the community as Ms. Katherine or “Aunt Kat.”
Mrs. Gowens is survived by her daughter, Judy and husband, Kent Gibbs of Arab; two grandsons and their wives—Alan and Mickie Gibbs and Lane and Heather Gibbs; two great-grandchildren, Wesley and Ashley Gibbs; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Odus Gowens, her parents and six siblings.
Funeral services will be at Dansby Heritage Chapel Sunday, September 13 at 3:00 p.m. The family will receive friends 1 – 3 p.m. Sunday. Rev. Jerry Stewart will officiate. Burial will be in Piedmont Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Alvin Goss, Rodney Gowens, Michael Smith, Gary Gowens, Harvey Barnes, and Donnie Gowens.
Flowers will be graciously accepted or if you prefer you may make contributions to the Philadelphia Baptist Church cemetery fund.
