Sydney Franklin

June 30, 1933 — October 6, 2021

Sydney Hope Buckelew Franklin, 88, of Piedmont, passed away peacefully in her sleep Wednesday, October 6, 2021. She was vacationing with her loving family at The Grand Hotel in Point Clear, Alabama.

Funeral services will be held at Dansby Heritage Chapel at 2:00 pm on Sunday, October 10, 2021, with the Reverend Michael Ingram officiating.

Sydney was preceded in death by her dear husband, Howard Thomas Franklin.

She was born in Mary Helen, Kentucky, and was a coal miner’s daughter. As a teenager, her family moved to the Buckelew Farm that was located on top of the mountain in Gadsden, Alabama. She graduated from Etowah County High School and Gadsden Business College. Sydney was an employee of Goodyear in Gadsden, Alabama, and retired with 30 plus years of service.

She moved to Piedmont when she married Howard, at the age of 22. She was a fixture in the community and was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Piedmont. She belonged to a Bible study at the church, enjoyed the Sunshine Club, and was an active member of the Esther Sunday School class.

Sydney dearly loved her family and friends and was happiest when spending time with them, especially her grandson, Ace. She was a prayer warrior. If asked to pray for a specific need, she was faithful to take that request before the Father in prayer. She read her Bible daily and loved the Lord with her whole heart.

She greatly valued the beauty of flowers and enjoyed creating beautiful arrangements. She enjoyed sudoku for relaxation, enjoyed playing cards with her friends, and was an award-winning short story writer.

Sydney is survived by her daughters, Connie (Roger) Young of Section, Alabama, and Camilla Franklin-Gibson of Montgomery; her grandson Ace Franklin Gibson; special nieces Sallie Sanford and Beverly Wright; special nephews Larry Rogers and Scooter Franklin; a host of out-of-town relatives; friends across the country and around the world; and her beloved dog, Rosie.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until the start of the service at 2:00 pm on Sunday.

Dansby Heritage Chapel is honored to serve the Franklin family.
