Mr. Willis Jones Stewart , 96, of Piedmont died peacefully at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Atlanta on Thursday, September 25, 2014 . He was born on May 20, 1918 in Cherokee Co., AL to Joseph M. and Nora Parker Stewart , the seventh of ten children. Willis loved telling stories and joking with everyone. He started with his brothers and sisters and continued through his children, grandchildren, friends, the staff of Piedmont Health Care and even with the Sisters and nurses at Our Lady til his final days.
Willis graduated from Piedmont High School in 1940 and took classes at Jacksonville State when he returned from serving in the Army Air Corp during World War II. He loved playing baseball, traveling all around to fields that weren't much more than pastures, playing from morning till night.
Mr. Stewart married Eloise Norene Jacks on June 28, 1946. They raised three children. He served as a Scout Leader for many years, touching many lives. He could fix or repair anything and did so for his family, friends, and neighbors. Willis retired from Standard Coosa Thatcher with more than forty years of service. After retirement, he spent time with his grandchildren and on a hobby he enjoyed, working with wood. He loved making doll beds and giving them away to children and adults alike. He made several beautiful pieces of furniture for his family. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents; six sisters; three brothers; his wife: Eloise; son: Alon; and a grandson: Geoffrey Stewart.
He is survived by two daughters: Olivia S. (Charles) Phillips of Conyers, GA, Bonita (Howard) Segars of Auburn, AL; six grandchildren: Matt (Mimi) Stewart, Kelsey Stewart, Ashley (Shane) Cash, Tyler Phillips, Nickolas Segars, and Callie Segars; two great grandchildren: Jax Stewart and Lexie Segars; special niece: Sue Freeman; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews; and many friends. Memorial services will be held Sunday, October 5, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. from Dansby Heritage Chapel with visitation from 1-2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 760 Pollard Blvd., SW, Atlanta, GA 30315 or Piedmont Rescue Squad, PO Box 333, Piedmont, AL 36272.
